Why Did John Oliver Buy Russell Crowe’s Joskstrap for $7,000? [VIDEO]

When Last Week Tonight host John Oliver learned about the actor Russell Crowe’s “Art of Divorce” auction, in which he selling off his favorite movie memorabilia to pay for alimony, Oliver was only too happy to buy help. Among the items he purchased (with HBO’s money) was a leather jockstrap from Crowe’s Cinderella Man. It cost $7,000.

Oliver exclaimed,

$7,000! That is a big price to pay just to find out what Russell Crowe’s balls smelled like in 2005.

The Crowe items that Oliver bought included:

  • his director’s chair from American Gangster (also Denzel Washington’s chair, which Oliver said cost even more than Crowe’s),
  • the hood he wore in Robin Hood (“which looks like something a circumcised penis would wear to administer a lethal injection”),
  • his vest from Les Miserables,
  • and his satin robe and gym shorts from Cinderella Man.

All of them (including the jockstrap) will be donated to the last remaining Blockbuster video store in Anchorage, Alaska, so that they can lure customers in with a permanent display of pieces of real Hollywood history—and customers are what the community actually needs.

As Oliver put it, “Are you not entertained?!”

He then addressed the manager of the only remaining Blockbuster in Anchorage, Alaska:

All this shit is yours. Just call us in the next 48 hours and we will send it to you. I really hope the Internet is good enough up there for you to see it in time, because if we don’t hear from you in the next two days, I know a transportation museum in Scranton, Pennsylvania, that I’m sure could make room for another exhibit.

We’ll update you when we hear if Blockbuster responded.
