President Donald Trump’s longtime personal attorney and “fixer,” Michael Cohen, killed a story Us Weekly was preparing in 2013 about an affair Donald Trump Jr. had with a Celebrity Apprentice contestant.
The Us Weekly story would have detailed a relationship Trump Jr. had with singer Aubrey O’Day between 2011 and 2012, according to the Wall Street Journal.
According to the WSJ, as Us Weekly was readying its story on Don Jr. and O’Day, they received a call from Cohen, who was furious.
He threatened legal action and became so irate that they muted the call while he spoke. According to someone who was in the room at the time,
We were all on speakerphone and huddled around the phone. He was just one of these New York characters where he was just like swearing at us and totally over-the-top threatening.
The magazine’s staff didn’t believe it was a big story that would be worth a legal fight. They had a good working relationship with the elder Trump on stories related to the TV show The Apprentice, so they dropped the story.
American Media Inc., which also owns the National Enquirer, purchased Us Weekly in 2017 from Wenner Media. The Enquirer has been accused of paying $150,000 to buy all the rights from former Playboy model Karen McDougal about an alleged affair with Trump that the tabloid never planned to publish.
Last month, Page Six reported that the relationship between Don Jr. and O’Day occurred while Junior was working as an “adviser” on his father’s reality TV show. His wife, Vanessa Trump, last month filed for an uncontested divorce last month in Manhattan Supreme Court.
O’Day penned a song about the affair: the first song on her only solo album, 2013’s Between Two Evils, is entitled “DJT.”
When Vanessa Trump was pregnant in 2007, Don Jr. complained in a radio interview that it was “hell” to be visiting the Playboy Mansion with a pregnant wife. “It doesn’t get worse than that, does it?” he asked.
